Operation Toy Train to stop in Vernon
Vernon. Operation Toy Train will make its first stop in Vernon Township on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 4:20 p.m. The train will leave at 5 p.m.
Operation Toy Train has been operating since 2009 on the first two weekends in December, visiting New Jersey towns as well as selected towns in southern New York.
Vernon Township will welcome Operation Toy Train at the tracks near the Veterans’ Memorial Park at 50 Vernon Crossing Road. The train will arrive in Vernon at 4:20 p.m. on Nov. 30 and will welcome the toy donating public until its departure at 5 p.m.
Toys are being collected on board by the US Marine Corps and will benefit Toys for Tots in accordance with Picatinny Arsenal in Dover and Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, N.Y.
For the last 10 years, Toys for Tots has collected over 25,000 donated toys which are distributed to underprivileged children in the collection area. There are 26 stops, with participating lines being the New York Susquehanna and Western Railway, the Middletown and New Jersey Railroad, the Dover and Delaware River Railroad along with the previously mentioned Black River and Western.
The New York Susquehanna and Western Railway will originate in Rochelle Park in Bergen County. Everyone is invited to donate a toy, meet Santa in the train’s caboose, also meet the Marines and Operation Toy Train volunteers and check out the train’s equipment.
