Gordon Jay Davenport passed away after a long illness on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2024, at St. Anthony’s Hospital, Warwick, N.Y. He was 81.

Born to Floyd and Harriet Davenport in Teaneck, he had lived in Park Ridge before moving to Vernon in 1971.

Gordon served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, then worked as a bus driver for New Jersey Transit for many years, retiring from the Wayne Depot in 2006.

He had a penchant for woodworking and enjoyed his many projects over the years.

He also took great joy in hiking, rafting, trips to the Shore, traveling, and collecting and listening to music, especially jazz and ’50s doo wop.

Gordon was predeceased by a brother, Floyd Davenport, and a sister, Aileen Sipos.

He was the beloved husband for 58 years of Catherine Davenport of Vernon; devoted father of Gordon S. Davenport and his wife Suzette of Vernon and Charles Davenport of Vernon; and dear brother of Suzanne DeBrock of Scottsdale, Ariz.

The family will receive their friends at Ferguson-Vernon Funeral Home, 241 Route 94 (1 Vanderhoof Court for GPS), Vernon, on Friday, Jan. 3 from 3 to 7 p.m. A funeral will be at the funeral home on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 10:30 a.m. with burial to follow at Glenwood Cemetery, Glenwood.

Memorial gifts to the Vernon Township Ambulance Squad or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital would be greatly appreciated.
