I'velived in Highland Lakes since 2003. That year, Vernon's administration was ruled by the Council/Manager form of NJ government under the Faulkner Act, in retrospect, a government that ran amuck thanks to paid out-of-town managers who were wife-beaters, shoplifters, and pilferers of township monies, even office equipment! I was proudly part of a petition drive to change Vernon's Faulkner form of government to Mayor/Council, whereas a mayor can now be elected by the people, and not chosen by a sitting council.
I've never disputed Vernon's identity as a four season recreational mecca; its beautiful mountain topography is exquisite and unique to New Jersey. What bothers me is our local government and Chamber of Commerce never seemed to grasp the concept that enhancing the appearance of Vernon's town center could draw businesses, shops, restaurants and cafes that would not only accommodate out-of-town visitors, but local residents as well, thereby increasing Vernon's economic development.
I believe it's time for new leadership in town. As candidate for Mayor, Howard Burrell has been a long-standing resident, and he has honorably served on several state, county and Vernon posts. In addition to bringing civility to our local government, Howard believes Vernon already possesses much of what is needed to bolster our town's economic development.
I support Margaret"Peg" Distasi and Joseph "Scott" Ghysels for Council. Peg's solid business background and rational plans to enhance Vernon's Main Street. by utilizing grants and a committee of professionals, is her serious vision for promoting Vernon businesses. Scott is a senior claims advisor for a large, regional insurance company, as well as Barry Lakes Property Owners Association's President for the last four terms. However he has always found time to attend council meetings and in doing business for Barry Lakes, proven he can work successfully with Vernon Township.
