Wirths: Murphy push for illegal immigrant driver’s license a 'bone head' idea
Assemblyman Hal Wirths blasted Gov. Phil Murphy’s push on Monday for lawmakers to pass a bill that would allow undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses.
“This is a ‘no-brainer’ only because it requires you to suspend all thinking and rational thought to support such a boneheaded idea,” said Wirths (R-Sussex). “Doing this would just provide another loophole so some can bypass every protocol we put into place after 9/11 to keep America safe.”
Speaking in Bloomfield, Murphy called on the public to pressure lawmakers to pass a bill calling it a ‘no brainer.’ “
For Murphy to stoke this debate the week of the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks by 19 foreign attackers, five of whom had overstayed their temporary visas, is as politically astute as a rock,” continued Wirths. “Murphy and his party are more concerned about protecting illegal immigrants for two simple reasons: party power and votes.”
Wirths noted that the state already provides driver’s licenses to immigrants when legal status can be confirmed.
“Murphy’s proposal makes a mockery of the legal pathway for immigrants with their verified documentation and waiting in line to enter this country,” concluded Wirths. “We shouldn’t prioritize immigrants without legal status above everyone else.”
