Softball team’s record improves to 2-5

VERNON. Vikings win games against Mount Olive and North Warren high schools.

Elizabeth Peek and Jessica LeFort each hit solo homers and Leigh Rose Hart hurled a six-hitter to steer the Vernon Township High School softball team to a 6-2 decision over Mount Olive on Saturday afternoon, April 15 at home.

The victory was the second in three games for the Vikings, who improved to 2-5 this spring.

MaryAnna Cova-Gomez (2-for-3, double, two RBI), Hailey Hanshaw (2-for-3, run) and Audrey Baldwin (1-for-3, run) also contributed to the win, which saw Vernon take a 6-0 lead after three innings.

Hart struck out three, walked two and didn’t allow an earned run.

After starting the season with four straight losses, Vernon earned its first victory of the season Thursday, April 13 with a 7-6 decision over North Warren at home.

The Vikings scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-3 lead before North Warren climbed within one run with three runs in the top of the seventh.

Hart struck out 11 and scattered nine hits in going the distance in the circle and also went 2-for-3 with a home run at the plate. Carly Amorosi (3-for-3, three runs), Cova-Gomez (2-for-2, walk, RBI, two runs) and Baldwin (two walks, run) accounted for the rest of the offense.

Vernon will play host to Jefferson at 4 p.m. Friday, April 21.

Baseball

Ian Schmid pitched a six-hitter with two strikeouts and no walks in helping to lift Vernon to a 6-4 victory over Mountain Lakes there Friday, April 14.

Vernon is 4-2 this spring and will be playing host to Jefferson at 4 p.m. April 21. The team dropped a 6-4 decision to Jefferson in the season opener April 4.

Jefferson (4-4) is 3-1 in the Freedom Division of the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference while Vernon is 2-2 in divisional play.

Boys lacrosse

Vernon captured its first victory of the season Wednesday, April 12 with an 11-10 decision over Kittatinny there.

Aidan Duffy (three goals), Gage Moskovitz (three goals), Ty Holden (two goals), Connor Sensbach (one goal, three assists), Kane Lynch (one goal, two assists), Owen Lally (one goal) and Branden Curley (0-of-21 face-offs won) led the offense while goalies Damon Greenwood (six saves) and Luca Vizzini (11 saves) anchored the defense.

The Vikings will play host to Morris Knolls at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 22.

Boys tennis

The Vikings (1-2) will be taking part in the 13th annual Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament this week.

The event began Monday, April 17 at the Pingry School in Martinsville, continues with the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds April 22 at Hunterdon Central High School in Flemington, and concludes Monday, April 24 at Sparta High School.

Competing for Vernon is Morgan Freifelder (first singles), Mike Malolepszy (second singles), Mike Onysko Koch (third singles), Alexander Keating and Luke Keating (first doubles), and Joseph Costa and Owen Young (second doubles).
