Local athlete racks up 1,000 points
SPARTA — Isaac Delbury. Stephen Brinkerhoff. David Amels. These names might not be household names but to the people of the Veritas Christian Academy community they are heroes of the basketball court.
They are the only three players in school history to score 1,000 points. The Wantage native, Amel's accomplishment came during his junior year at the Sparta-based school, just a few weeks ago.
Although Amels is the third player in Veritas history to score 1,000 points he is the first to do it as a junior.
Humble beginnings"When I was younger, I played with my older cousin," he explained. "After that I just didn't stop. I kept playing and practicing because I wanted to keep getting better."
This dedication and passion for the game translates well to his commitment to the school's team.
"I used to play for teams outside of school as well but not anymore," Amels said. "I practice with the team and then over the summer I practice on my own and play with whoever is in the park."
Amels also recognizes and respects the talent that has come before him.
"I feel honored that I’ve been able to achieve this in high school,” he said. “I’m glad that I have the talents to bless the community with something to watch. I want to try and share that with my team and help everyone to reach their goals.”
Amels, who also plays soccer, isn’t sure what the future holds for him.
“I don’t know if I will keep playing after high school. I’m still undecided,” he said. “I don’t have a plan and don’t really know if I will play in a college league. I’m just not sure yet.”
While he may be the third to score 1,000 points while wearing a Lions jersey. Amels probably won’t be the last so he has some advice for those players just starting out.
“They need to keep working hard," Amels said. "And don’t give up on their dreams if they want to keep playing.”
