Gaughran takes Newton race

SUSSEX COUNTY-Michael Gaughran of Newton was fastest to the finish in the 5th Annual Friend 2 Friend 5K Run contested in Sparta on Sunday. The 41-year-old led 188 runners to the finish line, breaking the tape in 17:49. Seven local runners turned in gold medal performances in their age divisions of the 5th Annual 5K Run. Lafayette's 12-year old Casey Campbell won the boys 19 & under competition in a time of 20:23 while 16-year old Ashley Meisinger finished first in the girls 19 & under bracket with a clocking of 23:43. Newton's 34-year old Kimber Zwart won the women's 30 to 39 age group with a time of 25:56 while 42-year old Debbie Jennings of Andover finished first in the 40 to 49 competition with a clocking of 24:28. Sparta's 51-year old Judy Quinn captured the first place trophy in the 50 to 59 age group with a time of 30:19. Tranquility's 57-year old Bogdan Bienko placec first in the men's 50 to 59 age bracket with a clocking of 21:27 and 67-year old William Decker of Newton crossed the line in 29 minutes flat to win the men's 60 & older competition. Picking up runnersup awards were Lafeytte's 46-year old Theresa Campbell, Newton's 16-year old Danny Khehalt, 17-year old Caitlin Khehalt, 31-year old Michael Smulewicz, 54-year old Peter Terranova, Sparta's 25-year old Erin Quinn, 29-year old Dorian Munoz and Vernon's 41-year old Craig Polizzi. Placing third were Lafayette's 36-year old John Mattessich, Newton's 15-year old Natalie Elvidge, 15-year old Kyle Reinhardt, 40-year old Jean Nugent and 65-year old Joseph Farinella plus Sparta's 51-year old Patricia Volin.
