Baseball team finishes season with 16-5 record

The Vernon Township High School baseball team ended its regular season in style, winning its sixth straight game on Thursday, May 25 with a 10-0, six-inning decision over Kittatinny at home.

Derek Lazier scattered two hits and one walk over the first five innings while striking out three. He also went 3-for-4 with two runs as Vernon improved to 16-5 this spring.

Other catalysts in the victory included Jake Klein (2-for-3, double, two RBI, four runs), Anthony Marositz (2-for-3, double, two RBI) and Michael Pecoraro, who pitched the final inning in relief of Lazier.

Vernon earned the ninth seed for the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) North Jersey, Section 1, Group 2 tournament and was scheduled to play at eighth-seeded Jefferson in a first round game Monday, May 22. The sectional quarterfinals were slated for Thursday, May 25.

Here is how other Vernon sports teams fared last week:

Outdoor track

The boys track and field team finished sixth at the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Championships on May 15 at home.

They were steered by their 4x400 meter relay team of Dylan Barca, Michael Evanick, Tyler Jones and Zack Mountain, who won gold.

Jones took second in the 800 meter run in 1:58.43. Mountain placed fourth in the 200 meter run in 23.18, fifth in the high jump and ninth in the long jump. Barca finished fifth in the 800 meter run in 2:02.87.

Leading the girls, who placed ninth in the team race, were freshmen Maureen Lovett, who was eighth in the discus with an effort of 90-04.00, and Juliette Jalbert, who was ninth in the high jump with a leap of 4-08.00.

Softball

Vernon (10-9) was seeded 13th and was slated to play at fourth-seeded Jefferson in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 2 tournament on Tuesday, May 23. The sectional quarterfinals are set for Friday, May 26.

In its only game last week, Vernon traveled to Somerset County and dropped a 1-0 eight-inning decision to No. 5 ranked Hillsborough. Sarah Davenport was dominant as she pitched a perfect game with 18 strikeouts and no walks for Hillsborough (21-2).

Maryanna Cova-Gomez leads the Vernon offense with 31 hits, 16 RBI and 19 runs.

Boys lacrosse

Led by five goals, one assist and three ground balls from Ty Holden, Vernon earned a 10-9 victory over Lakeland on Tuesday, May 16 at home.

Kane Lynch (one goal, two assists), Aidan Duffy (one goal), Connor Sensbach (one goal, one assist), Brady Hendricks (one goal) and Jake delRosario (one goal) rounded out the offense for the Vikings (7-8).

Girls lacrosse

The Vikings won their season-high fifth straight with a 14-6 decision over Wayne Hills on Thursday, May 18 in Wayne.

Vernon (9-7) was fueled by Sidney Van Tassel (six goals, one assist, 10 draw controls, three ground balls), Lexi Moskovitz (four goals, two assists), Makenna Thomas (two goals), Colleen Fraser (one goal, four assists, three draw controls), Kaitlyn White (one goal) and Abby Sokolewicz (five saves).
