Hamburg — The Hamburg Fire Department visited Great Beginnings Children’s Learning Center during Fire Safety Week. The children toured the fire truck while learning about all the equipment needed to fight a fire. After supervising a fire drill at the school, firefighters Jamie McCurry and Charlie Zweigle presented a fire safety lesson, explaining the importance of changing batteries in smoke alarms and to choose a family meeting place in case of a fire at home. They stressed that although fire is a frightening experience, children should never hide in their homes or run away from a firefighter. The firefighters also demonstrated how they put on their fire gear and breathe with a special oxygen mask. During Fire Safety Week, the children at Great Beginnings also learned about Stop, Drop and Roll, practiced how to stay low in a smoky room and created a variety of crafts related to the theme. The preschool class dressed up as Dalmatian puppies for Fire Safety Week.
