On Thursday, August 11, at 6:33 p.m. the Sussex Fire Department was dispatched with the Wantage Fire Department and Wantage First Aid Squad to Route 284 near Elizabeth Drive for a motor vehicle accident. According to a public statement issues by Sussex Fire & EMS, upon arrival, the Sussex Fire Department took command and found a pole leaning over the roadway with cable and telephone lines attached, and a large truck over the guardrail. The driver was out of the vehicle prior to the department’s arrival.

Sussex Engine 2 deployed hazmat pads and booms for a small diesel leak caused by the accident. Colesville Fire Engine helped with traffic control by closing the road at Route 284 and Sally Harden Road. The Beemerville Engine also helped by closing the road at Route 284 and Rose Morrow Road.

Sussex County Hazmat responded to the scene to handle the diesel leak; the NJ Department of Environmental Protection was notified of the leak as well. The NJ Department of Transportation was notified by state police due to the road detour required as a result of the pole leaning into the roadway. The road was closed until the pole could be repaired.

According to Sussex Fire & EMS, command was terminated at approximately 9:25 p.m.
