Tyler Burwell, 20, of Hopatcong and Andrew Acevedo, 19, of Mount Olive were charged with resisting arrest after police chased their car about 11:15 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 23.

Byram Township police tried to stop a white BMW after an officer saw it traveling at a high rate of speed on Route 206 North.

The car sped up, going more than 100 mph and passing another vehicle on the shoulder, police said. New Jersey State Police were notified as the vehicle entered Andover Borough.

Shortly after that, police found the car, which had slid off the road from Route 206 South.

As officers approached, two men fled from the car on foot.

The driver, later identified as Acevedo, ran into the woods and the passenger, Burwell, was apprehended.

A State Police helicopter and Sussex County Sheriff’s Department K9 Unit assisted with the search.

Burwell was charged with resisting arrest and taken to the Morris County Jail pending an appearance in Superior Court in Sussex County.

Acevedo later was apprehended by Mount Olive Police Department on Byram Township Police Department warrants for resisting arrest and eluding.

He was charged with resisting arrest, eluding, failure to report accident, leaving the scene of accident, fictitious plates, failure to yield right of way to emergency vehicle, speeding, reckless driving, careless driving, driving after driver license suspended, improper passing, unsafe lane change and following too closely.

Acevedo also was taken to the Morris County Jail pending an appearance in Superior Court in Sussex County.

New police chief

Guy Mariani was expected to be sworn in as Byram’s new police chief at the Township Council meeting Tuesday, March 4.

He replaces Dan DeWald, who is retiring.

DeWald was promoted to chief about a year ago, and Mariani was promoted to lieutenant at that time.

DeWald succeeded Chief Kenneth Burke, who retired after four years in that job.
