Weblos scout awarded Fastest Car at Pinewood Derby

Highland Lakes — Weblos scout, Evan Duerr, age 9 is the new Pinewood Derby champion of Pack 404. Evan’s car beat 55 other entrants to win the most coveted award: Fastest Car.
Cub Scout Pack 404 is comprised of boys ages 6 to 11 and are grouped by grade into Weblos, Bear, Wolf and Tiger dens.
The Pinewood Derby is a time-honored tradition for Cub Scouts that dates back to 1953 and since that time, millions of boys have entered the race. William Douglas from Weblos Den 5 described the race as “epic” and Reader’s Digest magazine named the Pinewood Derby as part of "America's 100 Best."
Each scout designs and crafts what he hopes will prove to be the fastest wooden racecar from a 7-inch block of pine. At this year’s Derby, the races were close and the boys all impressed the crowd and the judges with their creative designs. Evan’s winning car was built to look like an iPod touch.
Second-place finisher Dylan Fischer, 8, of the Bear den, was kept busy by Tiger scout Matthew Okken, 6, who sped into third place. Honorable mentions went out to Jonathan Chromcik, 6, winning the Judges Favorite award with his dinosaur theme car; Joseph Dunlop, 8 for Best Metal Design, and Edward Williams, 7 with Most Aerodynamic Car.
Pack 404 meets the last Friday of every month in Highland Lakes. For more information about joining, contact Mark Douglas at marksdouglas@gmail.com or visit www.beascout.org to find the nearest Cub Scout pack.
