On Sunday, Nov. 12, the Vernon Valley Karate Academy sponsored a Teen Girl’s Self-Defense seminar for the Vernon Township High School Field Hockey students.
The focus of the seminar was safety awareness, strategies to avoid attack, and techniques that can be used to break away from an attack when necessary.
The seminar was be taught by Sensei Tom Shull, Sensei Paul Doumanis and Sensei Monica McGovern from the Vernon Valley Karate Academy.
The girls developed strategies to avoid situations where they might find themselves in danger, ways to behave that make attack less likely, and techniques that can break off an attack to allow for escape.
“One way to avoid a potential attack before it happens is to trust your instincts. Your intuition, combined with your common sense, can help get you out of trouble.”, commented Sensei Tom Shull. “Being alert to your surroundings and maintaining an air of confidence that suggests that you will not be an easy target reduce the risk of attack.
