VERNON — Last week, 17 sixth- and seventh-grade students enthusiastically attended the first Vernon Township Police Department’s Junior Police Academy. The five days of training, both physical and educational, concluded with the graduation ceremonies held at the Vernon PAL on Friday.
The cadets included 16 boys and one girl.
According to Captain Daniel Young, who ran the academy, “The Vernon Police Department could not be more proud of the Junior Police recruits and their performance this week. Based on the feedback I have received from the parents and the recruits, this program has had a tremendous impact on them.”
In addition to members of the Vernon Police Department, additional training personnel included New Jersey State Police Troopers Joe Byra who is assigned to the Bomb Squad and Sergeant Melissa Brown and her K-9 police dog, Dixon. In addition, the state police Aviation Unit landed its NorthSTAR Medevac helicopter at Maple Grange Park.
Also participating were the Vernon Township Fire Department and Ambulance Squad along with the Morris County Sheriff’s Department Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
