Vernon High School inducts 31 NHS members
VERNON — Thirty-one members were recently inducted into the Vernon Township High School Chapter of the National Honor Society, a group of students who are not only scholars and athletes, but have committed themselves to serving others in their school and community.
Inductees included Eagle and Life Scouts, the president of the Vernon Youth Leadership Council, and a student who cut short a European vacation so she could help repair homes for the disabled poor.
Michelle Miani, president of the VTHS Chapter, presided over the 40th Induction Ceremony for the district, which is observing its 40th Anniversary this year. The VTHS Chamber Orchestra played before the opening of the dignified ceremony, and violinists Jessica Dunlop and Alex Gaura, NHS members inducted last year, played “Snow,” accompanied on the piano by Kristie Sweer.
A highlight of the ceremony is the lighting of the four candles of scholarship, service, leadership and character, the four pillars of the National Honor Society which make up the criteria by which the new members are accepted. Miani called on the parents and educators present to help the new inductees maintain the qualities that merited them membership.
“We ask you to promise to continue to feed our flames as we promise to continue to always to do our best, for ourselves, for others, and for you,” she said.
