The Pinewood Derby must go on

Against all odds, Cub Scout Pack 183 held their yearly Pinewood Derby on Jan. 31 at St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church in Vernon.

In December, committee chair Melissa Cole said all active Scouts held their Pinewood Derby Build Night, hosted by the Glenwood Pochuck Ambulance Squad. Cubmaster Rob Staab and Arrow of Light Leader John Dorne provided all the tools and templates for the Scouts and their families.

The day of the race

The Scouts registered their cars at the church on the morning of the race, which started at noon. They raced by Scout Dens, with awards given by Pack.

Also, first place was given by Den level – K: Lions.

The Pack awards are as follows:

● First: Tigers

● Second: Wolves

● Third: Bears

● Fourth: Weblos

● Fifth: Arrow of Lights

Certificates were also given for: Best Paint Job, Funniest, Most Realistic, and Most Creative.

Father Chris ensured a safe, fun, and socially distanced venue for the modified 2021 race. He allowed the Scouts to rent the large activity room with many windows so that families could watch the race outside where the fire-pit was roaring. The Scouts made their own S’mores and maintained their social distances. All attendees wore masks and used hand sanitizer.

Pack 183 was proud that all their Scouts went out “doing their best” for this unprecedented Pinewood Derby. They are also grateful to their race fans, Father Chris, Cub Master Rob Staab, and Boy Scouts Troop 404 for volunteering a track and Scout manpower. Elizabeth Felci livestreamed the event for any racers unable to attend because of Covid concerns or previous engagements.

Although different from previous years, said Cole, the Scouts and race fans had a wonderful time.
