During Red Ribbon Week in October, students of Sussex Middle School were challenged to bring in any spare change they had for the school's Pennies for Puppies cmapign, and the students contributed $334.

During a two-week period, Student Council homeroom representatives collected change from their classmates which would then go toward training K-9 Officer Kilo to detect narcotics and other drugs. Officer Kilo is a German Shepherd K-9 officer with the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office. He is the K-9 Partner of Detective Kieran McMorrow.

Officer Kilo will attend training beginning in January which will teach him to track and detect drugs.

Mrs. Oliveira, Health Teacher; Shane Schwarz, principal of Sussex Middle School, and the student council homeroom representatives presented a check to Sheriff Mike Strada, Detective McMorrow, and K-9 Officer Kilo, on Friday, Dec. 12. Later that morning, the eighth-grade DARE Graduation ceremony concluded with a demonstration by McMorrow with K-9 Officer Atlas showing the students how he detects hidden drugs.
