Sussex Charter School for Technology students cut hair to raise money

SPARTA — A total of 26 middle school students and three staff members at the Sussex County Charter School for Technology cut their hair to raise money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance for childhood cancer research.

Staff and students have been raising money and took turns having their hair cut by a professional barber at an event called St. Baldrick's Day, which took place at an assembly at the school on Friday, March 28. The students who raised the most money for the cause had the chance to color and cut the Vice Principal s hair and beard at the end of the event.

According to the St. Baldrick's Foundation website, more children are lost to cancer in the U.S. than any other disease in fact, more than many other childhood diseases combined. The website also says that the St. Baldrick's Foundation funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government by coordinating head shaving events and other fundraisers.

"For the fourth consecutive year, staff and students at the Sussex County Charter School have been committed to doing their part to fight childhood cancer, said Jim Baldini, administrative vice principal. "We plan to continue to shave our heads and stand in solidarity with cancer patients throughout Sussex County and beyond who are undergoing treatment. We are thrilled that we raised more than $4,000 for this very important cause and we are proud that we did it together as a caring school community."
