Student attends Girls’ Career Institute
VERNON. Ava Duffy, a senior at Vernon Township High School, joined 175 other sponsored girls in a mini-college experience where they could explore career choices.
Ava Duffy, a senior at Vernon Township High School, was a delegate to the 2023 Girls’ Career Institute (GCI) at the Douglas Residential Campus at Rutgers-New Brunswick.
Duffy was sponsored by the Vernon Township Woman’s Club.
She joined 175 other sponsored girls from throughout New Jersey in a mini-college experience where they could explore career choices.
For four days during the summer, the rising seniors enjoyed a taste of college life by dining in the cafeteria, living in a dorm, learning how to network, and attending workshops to learn about careers from prominent women in various fields.
“We participated in team-building activities, worked on group projects and also had fun activities like a Zumba class,” she told members of the Vernon club at their monthly meeting Sept. 28.
Formerly known as Girls Citizenship Institute, the program launched in 1947 at Montclair State Teachers College.
Delegates are selected based on interest, community service and participation in school activities.
Applications for the 2024 GCI will be available in the high school’s Guidance Department in late December. For information, call Valerie Seufert at 973-874-8671.
