Solar panels nearly installed at Sussex Middle School

The first phase of the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District's solar project is nearly complete.

The Sussex Middle School is estimated to save more than $15,000 the first year in electricity costs and $360,000 during its 15-year contract with Nautilus Solar Energy, LLC, of Summit.

Clifford Doll, consultant of PCC Design Team, said the local electric company still needs to inspect and authorize accepting the energy.

Phase I includes solar panels on the roof of the Sussex Middle School, along with stationary panels and support carports over the staff parking area.

The Sussex-Wantage Board of Education will buy whatever energy the school produces from the solar panels at a reduced rate. The Middle School is projected to produce more than 300,000 kilowatt hours.

On top of the cost savings, there also will be an educational component for the students. Data will be collected through software showing students streaming data of UV rays and money saved.

Phase II could begin at the Lawrence School if the school board enters a new contract with Nautilus Solar Energy. Currently, engineering is working on a layout which possibly could include the roof if it is the most efficient way to produce solar energy.

Phase III could be solar panels at the Wantage Elementary School. Possibly the solar panels would be mounted in the back of the school on a racking system. Roof mounted panels would be limited because of the old slate roof.
