MWHS senior Evan Liu named finalist in National Merit Scholarship Program
Monroe-Woodbury High School senior Evan Liu is among finalists for 7500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSP). In the fall, Liu will attend Massachusetts Institute for Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he is considering pre-med. He is a member of the French National Honor Society and, outside of school, an avid swimmer.
“Receiving this commendation is great. It really speaks to the work I put in and the great English and math teachers I’ve had that helped me become a better student. The incredible teachers at M-W have prepared students with the knowledge and skills to be successful at whatever we decide to pursue. For me, I think the knowledge I gained at M-W will be useful at the college level, and the productive habits I acquired will be applicable anywhere,” said Liu.
To become a finalist, M-W High School was required to submit a detailed scholarship application for Liu, providing information about the semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, as well as honors and awards received.
Approximately 15,000 students nationwide have advanced to the finalist level. All National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from this group of finalists. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
