Middle School students celebrate Colonial Day
SUSSEX BOROUGH — Sussex Middle School's seventh-grade students spent a day in the past and joined together to celebrate Colonial Day. Students hand crafted, created, baked and displayed projects that reflected the culture of the thirteen original colonies on Thursday, May 5.
Presentations included a dye demonstration as well as re-created colonial toys like Jacob's Ladder and corn husk dolls. Also displayed were models of the Mayflower, Salem Witch Trial graves, Jamestown forts, hand crafted patch quilts, recreations of colonial and early Native American art work and more.
Student Travis Boffa explained to other students the process of how the colonists made homemade butter. Other students made entrees from colonial recipes like apple pie, corn bread and sugar cookies. Student Kayla Diee dressed as Abigail Adams during a living history skit and gave a speech about Adams' life and historical significance.
"It was a great day!" Kayla exclaimed.
This annual event was hosted by seventh grade Social Studies teacher Kerri Freda and seventh-grade teacher Adrian Vroegindewey.
"This year there were so many outstanding projects and so much diversity," Freda said. "It was great to see the effort that the students put forth. My students made me very proud!"
Students Nick Whitehead and Lauren Kappelmeier entertained the students by playing "Yankee Doodle Dandy" with a duet on the flute and piccolo.
"I was really excited to share a colonial based snack with my peers." said student Alexis Caffrey
"This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to engage in the different facets of colonial history. Our student's are incredibly talented as was evident in the various exhibits." said Shane Schwarz, Principal.
