Local communities to remember 9/11 during Friday observances

Vernon. This year marks 19 years since the terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C., on September 11, 2001.

Vernon

Join the first-ever 9/11 remembrance ceremony sponsored by Vernon Township.

The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, in Veterans Memorial Park on Vernon Crossing Road. Flags and wreaths will represent and honor police officers, firefighters, EMS and VFW members.

Mayor Howard Burrell will deliver a speech, followed by prayers, patriotic songs, and a 21- gun salute.

Mishelle Downtain, the director of Recreation and Community Affairs, encourages first responders, 9/11 survivors and family members of those lost to attend.

Franklin

Franklin Borough Recreation Committee will sponsor its “9/11 Memorial Lights at the Pond” at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, at Franklin Pond.

The event is hosted by Concetto Formica, Franklin Borough Councilman, and Franklin Borough Recreation Committee: “Never forget was a promise we intended to keep. Come to the Franklin Pond on the evening of September 11 as we honor those who perished on September 11, 2001.”

Wantage

Holy Spirit Orthodox Church in Wantage invites the public to attend a special outdoor memorial prayer service at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, in honor and remembrance of the firefighters, police, first responders, and all others who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pa.

His Eminence, Archbishop Michael of New York and New Jersey, will also offer prayers for all those affected by COVID-19 -- those who died, survivors, and front line workers, including police and firefighters, doctors and nurses, emergency personnel, medical professionals, researchers and scientists. He will also pray for a successful vaccine.

There will also be a blessing of area fire engines, ambulances and police cars.
