Hilltop celebrates 35th commencement

SPARTA — It was a momentous occasion for the Hilltop Class of 2016 on Friday, June 10, as they became the 35th eighth grade class to graduate and become Hilltop alumni.
Close to 200 people gathered on the scenic 4.5-acre campus to cheer and celebrate as the Class of 2016 — the largest class at Hilltop in the last decade — received their diplomas and set forth to begin a new chapter of their lives at their respective high schools.
While the graduates celebrated their accomplishments, they also received sound advice from alumna Emma McGee D’Amico ’12, who shared her experiences and wisdom through her inspiring commencement address.
“Let me assure you that whether you have been at Hilltop for two years or 11 years, Hilltop has made a positive impression on your life,” she said. “The hands-on learning, individual attention and relationships you have built at Hilltop have provided the foundation needed for the most challenging of high school classes.”
D’Amico, who will attend Drew University in the fall, also provided tips on how to navigate their new high school surroundings. She urged them to join a sport, participate in school events and activities, take advantage of academic assistance and to always be on time.
“Graduates, enjoy your next four years – it goes by quickly. Yes, you are going to face challenges in high school, but remember you have been given a Hilltop education,” she added. “Apply all you have learned and you will succeed – go for it!”
In addition to D’Amico’s speech, the graduates reflected on their own experiences, received a variety of academic awards and received well wishes from the faculty and Head of School Peter Gordon.
“The Class of 2016 was a class of action and purpose. They have showed grit and determination, compassion and empathy. They worked hard and their efforts have paid off,” said Gordon. “Congratulations, eighth graders, for your growth, development and academic advancement.”
