VERNON — The High Point Wildcats football team won their first game of the season, 28-21, over Vernon Township on Friday.

It was High Point's first win since November 2011.

Despite trailing 21-14 after three quarters and being pounded by hard rain and the Vernon Vikings' defense, the Wildcats rallied by scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the win.

High Point wide receiver Tommy Hooker caught a 15-yard pass from quarterback Brandon Carr tightening the score 21-20. The extra point kick ricocheted off the left upright and back onto the field, keeping the Wildcats behind by one point.

Later in the fourth quarter, Matt Musilli crossed the goal line from two yards out enabling the Wildcats to pull ahead 26-21. High Point got gutsy on the next play by going for a two-point conversion instead of the extra point kick.Carr connected with wide receiver Tim O'Malley to seal the deal.

Vernon Township High School (0-4) remains the only Sussex County varsity football team without a victory so far this season.

Carr was 15-for-26 for 165 yards in the air and Musilli finished with 120 yards on 18 carries.

Chris Pontus, ken Artsma and Tim Van Lenten each scored a touchdown for Vernon.
