Cedar Mountain hosts open house

VERNON — Vernon families enjoyed good, wholesome fun on Sept. 15, at the Cedar Mountain Primary School Fall Harvest Open House.
The open house was courtesy of the Vernon Township Education Association (VTEA) grant through the Pride Committee. Chairperson and Math Coach Laurie Nelson reflected, “We are proud of our great public schools!”
Principal Rosemary Gebhardt greeted students, who responded with big hugs, while Cedar Mountain spotlighted their curriculum for parents and students to see and experience.
Families visited the Media Center, Computer and Math Lab, interacting with the Vernon Township District Chief Technology Officer Matthew Shea, Reading Specialist Kristina Krops, and Math Supervisor Russell Rogers, along with many dedicated teachers.
Rogers worked with first grader Christopher on the number line balance beam, with a hands-on-approach to representing number sentences. As Rogers taught Christopher, he said, “You can do this in Algebra.”
Food, education, and fun put everyone in a good mood.
Sodexo food service company served delicious, healthy food, with flair and kindness.
Cindy O'Donnell, the apple lady with rosy cheeks, handed out delicious honey crisp apples, with cinnamon and sugar or caramel sauce.
Theresa Lypowy served yummy Apple/cheddar crepes and apple milkshakes with a big smile.
High school helpers volunteered helping students create a little treasure chest craft, “Education is a treasure!”
Tony Horler and son Timmy sat on the “Buddy Bench” for a peaceful moment.
The Vernon Township Fire Department allowed wee ones to explore one of their fire trucks in front of the building.
Also in front of the school, Project Self-Sufficiency brought their Journey RV and information about opportunities for people to use in their own communities: computer labs, job search assistance, cover letter and resume help, counseling, referral to community services, food, diapers, and clothing.
