VERNON — Career Day was held at Lounsberry Hollow Middle School in Vernon on Thursday, March 21 for all sixth grade students.
Parents, community members, and local business people volunteered to come to school and share their careers with the students.
Career Development is part of the Vernon Township School’s Counseling curriculum. In sixth grade, students begin to develop career awareness through a variety of programs. The students begin to explore their own personality and learn how traits relate to certain job categories.
Through the “Careers for Me” program, they complete an interest inventory which suggests possible career fields based on their personal interests. This exercise allows them to explore their likes and dislikes and see the relationship to the world of work. Students also begin to acquire career information through researching possible careers of interest. They compile such information as educational requirements, working conditions, salary ranges, and job outlook.
The “Make it Real” program takes students through real-life situations such as decision-making, budgeting, and the specifics of certain career specialties.
Career Day allows the students to hear from people in the real world and gives them exposure to a variety of jobs. They learn about educational requirements, working conditions, a typical day at work, and are able to ask questions and see demonstrations. The students choose careers of interest and spend the morning rotating through their three choices.
