Business owners care for butterflies

VERNON — Monarch butterflies are free to see and the milkwood that is necessary for their survival is also free, thanks to Jon and Maureen Lasslett owners of Perfect Timing Sewing Machine Company on Route 94 in Vernon Township.
After witnessing the Monarch population near their shop located in an open, field area, the Lassletts did some research about the colorful creatures.
“We were fascinated by their life cycle and the incredible distance the butterfly travels in its migration. We now try to do whatever we can to ensure their survival,” stated Jon.
With the help of websites LiveMonarch.org and Got-Milkweed.com and free garden milkweed seeds, residents can pick up seeds and cultivate milkweed in their own backyards to benefit Monarchs.
According to the Live Monarch website, herbicides and pesticides and freakish weather patterns destroy milkweed and contribute to the demise of the pollinating Monarch. In the long run, the destruction of pollinators effects the human population because with no pollination, our food source is also in danger.
Jon Lasslett loves the location of his shop, both for doing business and for observing all the birds and butterflies right outside his front door. Everyone is invited to visit Perfect Timing Sewing Machine Company at 99 Route 94 during regular business hours Tuesdays through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursday noon to7 p.m. to receive free milkweed seeds to plant in their backyards to help the butterflies survive.
