9 Vernon students win scholarships
VERNON. The John Cocula Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to honor the legacy of a longtime Vernon resident and former teacher and coach in the Garfield school system.
The John Cocula Memorial Scholarship Fund has named the winners of its scholarships for 2023.
They are Vernon residents Dylan Bressler, Richard Healy III, Riley Lewicki, Olivia Meneses, Benjamin Moskovitz, Lexi Moskovitz, Emma Redding, Ian Schmid and Christopher Wynne.
Scholarships also were awarded to four students in Garfield.
This year, the scholarship provides a $1,500 award to an accredited higher education program.
Eligible students must be a resident of Vernon or Garfield. Selection criteria include academic performance, letters of recommendation, participation in sports and a personal essay.
The board and selection committee is made up of business and community leaders from throughout northern New Jersey.
The fund’s total awards now exceed $472,500. It was established to honor the legacy of John Cocula, a longtime resident of Vernon and a former teacher and coach in the Garfield school system.
The John Cocula Memorial Golf Outing, the main fundraiser for the xcholarships, will be Thursday, June 22 at Black Bear Golf Club in Franklin, with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.
