Stewart rejoins board of educational nonprofit

Margaret “Peggy” Stewart of Hamburg will be returning to the board of trustees of the New Jersey Center for Teaching and Learning (NJCTL).

Stewart served on the NJCTL board from 2007 to 2011 before being named as director of communications for the educational nonprofit, an online learning institution developed by teachers to train teachers.

“Peggy is very accomplished and well-known educator; we are very pleased to welcome her back to the board,” said Bob Goodman, executive director of NJCTL.

“Peggy, a social studies teacher in Vernon Township for 20 years, was among the early board members of our organization and played a vital role in shaping our mission and vision.”

Stewart has been recognized for her work in education circles, earning the Princeton University Prize for Distinguished Secondary School Teaching as well as being named the 2005 New Jersey State Teacher of the Year.

“I’m honored for the opportunity to share my expertise in practice and policy perspectives to accelerate the mission and impact of the New Jersey Center for Teaching and Learning,” she said. “I’m looking forward to connecting the high-caliber teaching and learning resources offered by the NJCTL with other education leaders nationwide.”

Stewart has served on the board of Learning Forward New Jersey since 2013 and is now president-elect. The nonprofit is the state chapter of an international organization that helps build capacity to equitably serve all students.

A private education consultant since 2012, she also served on the National Education Association’s Committee on Effective Teachers and Teaching and was a member of the New Jersey Professional Teaching Standards Board. She has worked internationally as a leadership development consultant in Japan, Germany and Italy.
