Elizabeth 'Betty' Johson

Elizabeth “Betty” Johnson of Wantage, N.J., passed away on Feb. 11, 2014, at her home with her family. She was 89.

The daughter of the late Francisek & Antonina Giza Barczak, she was born Aug. 8, 1924, in Warwick, N.Y.

Betty was a communicant at St. Monica’s Roman Catholic Church in Sussex, N.J., and a member of the American Legion Post 213 Auxiliary, where she was serving as unit chaplain. She also was a member of the Hudson Valley Polonaise Society.

Survivors include her children; Margaret “Peggy” Johnson of Vernon, N.J.; Nancy E. McCurdy and husband, Bill, of Sussex, N.J.; Richard A. Johnson and wife, Jeannie, of Sussex, N.J.; John J. Johnson and wife, Rebecca, of Greenvill,N.Y.; nine grandchildren, Andrea Randolph, Alexis Randolph; John Pytleski, Carrie Roberts, Austin Cafferky, Ashley Johnson, Cassandra Johnson, Christopher Johnson, and Timothy Johnson; three great-grandchildren, Darian Raub, Emily Raub, and Adrianna Raub; three sisters, Genevieve Koutney of Tennessee, Theresa “Dolly” Dombroski of Newburgh, N.Y., and Rose Paffenroth of Vero Beach, Fla.; 2 brothers, Frank “Corporal” Barczak of Sussex, N.J., and John Barczak and his wife, Jane, of Middletown, N.Y. She is further survived by many nieces & nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Richard H. “Dick” Johnson; sister, Stella Myslinski and three brothers, Vincent, Joseph & Walter Barczak.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, Feb. 16 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at T.S. Purta Funeral Home, 690 County Route#1, Pine Island, NY 10969.

Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. on Monday Feb. 17 at St. Monica’s Church, Wantage, N.J.

Burial will be in Clove Cemetery, Rt. 23 Sussex, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Vernon Township Ambulance Corps., or to St. Anthony Community Hospital Foundation, 15 Maple Avenue, Warwick, NY 10990 or to the American Legion Post 213 Auxiliary, PO Box 447, Sussex, NJ 07461, in Betty’s name.
