2 face DWI charges in Sparta
SPARTA. Police trace the driver of a truck accused of hitting a retaining wall from a license plate found at the scene of an accident.

Paul Denamiel, 51, of Sparta was charged with driving while intoxicated after his truck hit a retaining wall about 11:40 p.m. Jan. 15, police said.
Officers responded to a home on Summit Trail on a report of property damage caused by a black pickup. The resident said she and her son heard a loud crash and saw a truck stuck on their retaining wall spinning its wheels before gaining traction and careening across their neighbor’s lawn.
The resident found a license plate in her front yard after the truck drove off toward Summit Terrace.
Officer Tim Lynott obtained information about the registered owner from the plate and went to a home in Sparta where he saw a black Dodge Ram pickup in the driveway with damage to the front and rear, a flat front tire on the passenger side and a missing mirror on the driver’s side.
Officer Dan Elig spoke to the registered owner, Denamiel, who initially denied driving the vehicle or getting into an accident before saying he took a wide turn and struck a retaining wall on his way home, police said.
Denamiel appeared to be intoxicated but denied drinking alcoholic beverages, police said. He was arrested after completing field-sobriety tests and was taken to police headquarters for processing.
After breath testing, he also was charged with careless driving, reckless driving, failure to report an accident, leaving the scene, failure to maintain lane and failure to provide documents.
He was given a court date and released to a sober adult.
Car on road shoulder
Stephanie Dehagara, 26, of Wantage was charged with driving while intoxicated about 3 a.m. Jan. 14, police said.
When Officer Thomas Herd conducted a welfare check on a blue Hyundai that was stopped on the shoulder of Route 15 North, he saw the driver getting sick in the grass on the shoulder.
He believed that Dehagara was intoxicated and asked her to perform field sobriety tests. After the tests, she was arrested and taken to police headquarters.
After breath testing, she also was charged with careless driving and given a court date before being released to a sober adult.
