St. Tikhon’s Seminary Choir will present a short program of Orthodox sacred music at Holy Spirit Orthodox Church in Wantage, at 7 p.m. on Saturday, December 14, with a light festive reception to follow. Admission is free and open to the public.
St. Tikhon’s Seminary is located in South Canaan, Pa., directly across the street from St. Tikhon’s Monastery, the oldest Orthodox monastery in America. The Seminary choir is made up of talented seminarians who sing daily in liturgical services at the Monastery and who travel regularly around the country to share the beauty of sacred choral music in the Orthodox tradition.
The choir will be led by St. Tikhon’s music director Benedict Sheehan. Sheehan is a conductor, composer, and choral clinician who has been called “a rising star in Orthodox sacred music” (Orthodox Arts Journal). His work has been featured on numerous platforms, including several Grammy-nominated recordings. Sheehan’s newly-composed Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom was premiered and recorded in 2019 by The Saint Tikhon Choir—the professional vocal ensemble of St. Tikhon’s Monastery—and will be released in March of 2020 on the Cappella Records label.
St. Tikhon’s Seminary Choir has also made a number of recordings with Benedict Sheehan, including Bless the Lord, O My Soul; Memory Eternal; and Hymns of Holy Russia in the New World, all of which can be found on Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, and other online music services.
