On Tuesday, Feb. 11 the Skylands Sierra Club Group will host a screening of the documentary film The Highlands Rediscovered.

The event will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Fellowship Hall, 1 W. Nelson St. in Newton. The program is free and open to the public.

The 30-minute documentary explains the history of the Highlands region and why it became the source of clean drinking water for more than half of New Jersey's population.

The film explains the ecological function of the Highlands forests in cleansing rain as it percolates into aquifers and ultimately into surface reservoirs.

The film also presents the challenges the Highlands region faces in retaining its important forests under pressures to develop the land.

Highlands Coalition representative Erica Van Auken will lead a discussion after the film. Light refreshments will be served.
