Garlic lovers converge on Lafayette
LAFAYETTE-There were definitely no vampires in Lafayette this past weekend. They would not have survived the perfume scent of garlic wafting from Olde Lafayette Village as the Garden State Garlic Association gathered for its fourth annual celebration of their beloved bulb. Serious garlic lovers believe it is their destiny "to share knowledge of garlic varieties, problems, and cultural methods." Their mission statement is: "To educate and promote the growing and eating of good garlic." Plans for the three-year-old group include a soon-to-be published newsletter and education for the uninitiated. A two-year membership in the group costs $15. In addition to more than 60 varieties of garlic for sampling and sale and 150 varieties on display brought by association members, local farmers brought heirloom tomatoes and exotic vegetables, including albino eggplant. The association will back at the village after the winter with its "Taste of Spring" event. For more information, visit garliconline.com.
