Vernon field hockey looking for improvement

Although they played competitively last season, the Vernon High School field hockey team struggled in terms of wins and losses, finishing 2014 with an overall record of 5-12-2.

This fall, the Vikings are not only hoping to be competitive, but finish with more notches in the win column as well. Judging by the amount of returning players, battle-tested at the varsity level, Vernon apparently has some good fortunes awaiting them this year.

Veterans who are back in the lineup for the Vikings this season include Savannah Artsma (senior, left back, captain), Montana Avagnano (senior, center midfield), Jenna Day (senior, right back), Emily Garofalo (senior, left wing, captain), Abie Leggour (senior, left midfield), Lindsay Verrico (senior, center back), Danielle Ward (senior, right wing, captain), Brenna Del Bagno (junior, center forward) and Brianna White (junior, right wing).

Key newcomers hoping to make a big impact on the varsity program include Keri Stefkovich (senior, sweeper, captain) and Kaitlyn Gallaugher (junior, goalie).

“We have nine returning varsity players and 14 seniors," Vernon coach Hollyce Schoepp said. “I will look to each and every one of them to set the standards and act as team leaders both on and off the field. I expect them to walk the talk when it comes to being a role model, working hard and working as a unit. Our ultimate success will be dependent on these experienced players being able to develop the chemistry and communication necessary to be effective on the field."

The Vikings are scheduled to open the regular season with a home game against Boonton.

Vernon competes in the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference American Division.

“We will be competitive and a challenge to each team in our league,’’ Schoepp said.
