High Point sisters sprint at Misericordia

    Katie and Kelty Fairchild from High Point High School were sophomore sprinters for the Misericordia University (Dallas, Pennsylvania) women’s outdoor track and field program this spring. Katie and Kelty were on the 1,600-meter relay team that placed first at the Metro Atlantic Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by Messiah College.

    Kelty placed third and Katie was fourth in the 200 and both were members of the second place 400-meter relay team at the MAC Championships. The sisters were also part of the record setting 1,600-meter relay team at the Swarthmore Final Qualifier.

    The Cougars placed first as a team at the MAC Championships with 205 points.

    Kevin Berge from Vernon High School was sophomore listed as a pitcher and catcher for the Saint John Fisher College (Rochester, New York) baseball team this spring. Berge had a pitching record of 4-2 and tallied a save on the mound as well. He struck out 25 batters and had an earned run average of 1.84.

    The Cardinals had an overall record of 25-18 and they were 11-2 on their home field. St. John Fisher placed third at the Empire 8 Conference Championship held in Utica, N.Y. They tallied victories over Utica College and SUNY Canton, but they were defeated by Steven’s Institute of Technology. Berge is listed as a sports and fitness administration major with a minor in business. Berge was second-team all-conference and third-team American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings New York All-Region.

    James Siglin from Vernon High School was a junior on the Widener University men’s outdoor track and field team this past season. Widener placed first at the Metro Atlantic Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by Messiah College. The Pride placed second at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships held in Springfield, Massachusetts.

    Siglin is listed as a civil engineering major.

    Chelsea Eckert from High Point High School was on the roster as a freshman pitcher for the University of Connecticut’s (Storrs) softball team this spring. Eckert appeared in 34 games and started in 21 of them for the Huskies. She was second on the team with six pitching wins and she was also second on the squad with 70 strikeouts. Eckert also had two saves (tied for the team high) for the Huskies.

    The Huskies had an overall record of 18-35 and they were 4-13 in the American Athletic Conference. They had four wins on their home field. Connecticut advanced to the American Athletic Conference Championship Tournament in Orlando, Fla., where they were defeated in the opening round, 1-0, by Tulsa.
