Shortway's Letter to the Editor

"I am a candidate for Vernon Township Mayor but I am not a politician. I am a career public servant with a history of success, both in government and small business.

My numerous accolades were earned from my actions on the streets fighting crime and as a police administrator, working with schools to establish programs to reduce juvenile delinquency, and mentoring teenagers on athletic fields and in classrooms. I have served Vernon Township for more than 20 uninterrupted years through our schools, PAL and municipal government.

My family’s business continues to grow even during tough economic times. We bring hundreds of people to Vernon to support our local businesses, showcase our great facilities, provide a positive activity for our youth and we fund thousands of dollars annually to our Township’s recreation account.

My election to the office of Vernon Mayor will not be about salary or benefits, it is about you, my neighbors, friends and community. My actions will reflect The People’s Will.

Together, we can build a better pathway to a healthier community where we can ride bikes, play in parks, display art, and walk paths that are handicap accessible and stroller friendly. We will aggressively strive to build a passive recreation trail system as part of an infrastructure that supports economic sustainability for tax relief.

We will implement a municipal competitive employment policy. Municipal employment, will be competitive and based on qualifications that includes veteran preference.

We will support our emergency services by creating a Volunteer Emergency Support Plan.

I took an oath decades ago to protect and serve. I aim to do just that. Please provide me the opportunity to be Vernon’s Mayor to build a more connected, sustainable and vibrant reality for Vernon."
