Sussex certifies 2014 audit

The Sussex Borough Council certified the 2014 annual audit on Tuesday night.

Municipal Auditor, who presented the audit, reported the borough took in $4.3 million, $3.5 of which came from $3.5 million.

Revenues were $176,000 over expenditures, increasing the fund balance to $243,000, and the tax rate jumped 0.5 percent.

This year, the Borough received only two recommendations from the state regarding a formal purchase policy and dividing the duties among the Treasury Department and the Water/Sewer Utility Collection to provide enough checks and balances.

Ferry said due to the limited number of employees, three in Sussex Borough, and budget constraints, most small municipalities have difficulties providing enough checks and balances.

In order to address the latter recommendation, Mayor Jonathan Rose suggested reconciling the software adjustment log monthly against resolutions made by the Council.

Rose also said although some of the comments on the audit did not change, the controls in the borough are a lot better than they were a couple of years ago.
