The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will donate $10,000 to restore the exterior of the Reverend Elias Van Bunschooten Museum.

Funding for this project was made possible through the sponsorship of Chinkchewunska Chapter, NSDAR, located in Wantage. The Reverend Elias Van Bunschooten Museum was built in 1790 and deeded to the Chinkchewunska Chapter NSDAR in 1970 for historical and educational purposes. In 1970, the house was placed on the State and National Registers of Historic Sites and Places and is now known as the DAR Van Bunschooten Museum.

The chapter has devoted hours of time and labor to restore and maintain this fine historical homestead. Starting early July the project will begin with the replacing of the rotted and water damaged facia and soffit structure on the rear of the building and upon completion of these repairs, the exterior of the museum will be power washed, scraped, sanded, primed and a finish paint coat will be applied. The windows will be caulked, reglazed and painted. Window shutters will be scraped and sanded before applying a final coat of paint. Hanging of the newly resurfaced shutters will complete the project.

"We are thrilled to be receiving such a generous donation from the DAR," Chinkchewunska Regent Bonnie Matthews said. "We realize that our grant is just one of the many that they make throughout the year to preserve our nation's history. We feel fortunate that they have chosen to assist us in the restoration of the exterior of the museum."

The DAR grants program was started in 2010. Funding is awarded to support projects in local communities that promote the organization's mission areas of historic preservation, education and patriotism.
