Vernon students teach classmates about tolerance

The annual Vernon Township High School Tolerance Fair took place recently with a new twist. This student-driven event featured more than 20 presentations on humanitarian crises. Students in Literature of the Holocaust and Issues of Conscience classes spent the year researching, assembling and creating artwork to turn the high school’s upper library into a room glowing with humanity’s perils and stories of righteousness. Student presentations ranged from modern news events such as Ferguson, Mo., and the work of Malala Yousef, to more historical events like Unit 571 and the Nazis’ treatment of the disabled.

This year’s fair saw two new components. Students of both classes not only presented their research, but they also added a philanthropic effort where they used various fundraisers to generate $575 for the Malala Foundation. Additionally, the fair featured a keynote speaker to address student presenters. Dr. Anthony Balzano of Sussex County Community College led a lecture and discussion of the 10 major ideas affecting modern gender relations.

Presentations were given by the students to the students. The layout and organization of the fair was organized by senior service representatives Violet Reed, Morgan Parker, Ashley Vernola and Paige Koehler.
