The Vernon Day Celebration at Maple Grange Park once again hosted this year’s annual Vernon Valley Karate Academy “PAL Benefit Karate Tournament, on Sunday, June 7, in which students form throughout the area met to demonstrate their martial arts skills.

Ranging in age between 4 and 13, participants competed in three different karate disciplines: Kata, the performance of prearranged karate techniques, Kumite, sparring between two students where points are awarded for effective and controlled punches and kicks, and Kobudo, arrangements of fighting moves using traditional Okinawan weapons.

Sensei Shull, director of the tournament and owner of the Vernon Valley Karate Academy, commented the PAL organization shares a common goal with the Karate Academy.

“We develop positive values in our students. It is exciting to witness young people competing together in a true spirit of friendship and sportsmanship. We develop a positive self-image that promotes pride in our accomplishments and respect for one another. Karate strives to bring out the very best in a person. Discipline, confidence and politeness are the qualities that stand out as the competitors exhibit their expertise.”

Each year the Vernon Valley Karate Academy works hard to raise funds to benefit the local Police Athletic League. This year the school, along with the continued support of many local businesses and residents, was able to generate $3,000 to help the PAL to help our local youngsters.

Beginning in the summer, an introductory karate program will again be offered through the PAL. Anyone interested in participating, please contact the Vernon Valley Karate Academy at (973) 764-3104.
