Council members concerned over water, development

Both Councilwoman Georgeanna Stoll and Councilman Mario Poggi voiced concerns regarding the good of Sussex Borough at the Council's meeting May 18th.

After speaking with former Councilman Sal Lagattuta, Stoll discovered that he had referred another rate method and analysis to the Borough. Stoll brought the new method and analysis up for discussion, and Mayor Jonathan Rose said it would be reviewed after the current quarter ends.

On March 31, Stoll was the only Council member who voted against the water/sewer rate increases. She said there must be another way. Councilman Robert Holowach abstained.

Poggi voiced concerns regarding Area C of the Route 23 Designated Rehabilitation area, from the gas station to Brookside Ave. He said he did not want Sussex Borough to become all strip malls, specifically like Franklin on Route 23. He is especially concerned regarding very famous historical buildings within Area C.

Councilman Robert Holowach asked whether the area in question would “stay away from eminent domain.”

Rose said it is not an eminent domain situation, but would allow spot zoning. Later, he spoke of private property rights of individuals, and that the facades of future buildings could be specified to maintain a Victorian style.

Councilwoman Katherine Little said development is great for ratables, but it can destroy the flavor of the town.

Rose encouraged Poggi to attend the Planning Board meetings because his input would be valuable.
