Last Comic Standing's Kathleen Madigan comes to Newton

Kathleen Madigan is bringing her stand-up act to the Newton Theatre on Thursday, June 4.

Madigan has been doing comedy for more than 25 years. She has had Netflix specials and was even featured on NBC TV's "Last Comic Standing."

"I started doing comedy when I was younger," she said. "I was working in a bar and when we were done we would go next door and do stand-up at an open mic there."

Although she had been in the industry for years and had even appeared on several late night shows, her two seasons on "Last Comic Standing" changed her audience a bit.

"Kids watch primetime," Madigan explained. "Before that it was a different group because people didn't know I had been on TV before... They didn't know who I was until that show. It was a lot of fun too."

While audiences may not notice a difference, the experience changes for Madigan if the show is being recorded for television or Netflix.

“In general the show is the same,” she said. “It is brighter though if it is being taped. They have to do certain lighting and they put spotlights as well. For other shows I don’t have that. We like to keep it darker.”

While the material is clean, the show might not exactly be kid friendly.

“It’s a pretty clean show. The material isn’t blue but there is some bad language,” Madigan said. “We have an opening act with Tony [Deyo] so overall it will just be a good night. It is an hour and a half of laughing, so people will have a good time.”

Kathleen Madigan will perform at the Newton Theatre at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 4. Tickets start at $34. The Newton Theatre is located at 234 Spring St, Newton. For more information call 973-383-3700 or visit kathleenmadigan.com.
