Legislation sponsored by District 24 legislators State Sen. Steve Oroho and Assemblyman Parker Space to rename State Highway Route 15 in Sussex County in honor of the late Senator Robert E. Littell was signed into law today by Gov. Chris Christie.

Under the identical bills, the Sussex County portion of Route 15 will now be designated the “Senator Robert E. Littell Memorial Highway” in honor of the late District 24 legislator and Sussex County native who served in the state Assembly and Senate for 40 years.

Upon his retirement in 2008, he was the longest serving member of the legislature. While in the legislature, he assisted in opening two centers for child abuse victims and sponsored legislation that led to the creation of the Commission on Open Space, the formation of the Garden State Preservation Trust, the preservation of Sterling Forest, and the establishment of the Farmland Preservation Program.

“The Senator Robert E. Littell Memorial Highway will now be a permanent and visible reminder of Senator Littell’s tireless work to better the lives of families in Sussex County and all those he came in contact with,” said Oroho, who succeeded Senator Littell as the state senate representative in the 24th District. “Senator Littell was a remarkable man who earned the respect of all he met through his kindness, fairness and commitment to personally respond to the concerns of those in the neighborhoods he represented. Senator Littell has left a lasting legacy and I’m pleased that future generations will be reminded of that legacy through the renaming of this highway.”

According to Space, Littell was dedicated not only to his district, but all of New Jersey.

“His commitment to public service is an example to everyone that you can make a difference," he said. "Senator Littell loved his family and this great state. We can never truly thank him for his many contributions to New Jersey, but seeing his name on Rte. 15 will always remind us of someone who cared deeply about helping people.”
