Reading success sends Lounsberry Hollow principal to roof

Despite a cool day with strong driving winds on Wednesday, May 13, Lounsberry Hollow Middle Schoo principal stuck by his principles and spent the day in his temporary office on the school’s rooftop.

In October, special education teacher Kristie Lyons along with teacher-librarian Cheryl Turner introduced the “Book It Pizza Hut Reading Program” to the school. As a 30-year-old reading incentive program, each month students are required to meet a reading goal in order to earn a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.

The challenge was for students to read 2,500 independent reading books in a seven-month period. If they did this, McKay promised to move his office to the rooftop for a day. Last week, the school tallied all the books the students read and not only was the goal met, it was surpassed with the students having read a total of 3,342 books.
