Vernon street fair planned on May 23

If Main Street is the traditional center of a community’s social, cultural, and economic activity, the Vernon Chamber of Commerce is determined to prove that new things are happening in its commercial neighborhood, as it will host its first street fair on Saturday, May 23, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

“This free event will let residents and visitors alike begin to see all that Vernon has to offer,” chamber President Elmer Platz said. “Local merchants, not-for-profit groups clubs, organizations and other establishments are invited to apply for an outdoor exhibit and connect with the community."

Dozens of food vendors and entertainers are expected at this event, hoping to serve as a catalyst for those wishing to see retail development continue along this specially designated section of Vernon, near its historic heart.

Geography determined the foundation for Vernon’s Main Street, where two early roads intersected in the early 1700s: a “King’s Highway,” now called Route 94 and a western shortcut over the mountains to what eventually became known as County Highway 515. And, until a few of years ago Vernon was lacking a Main Street, so the town leaders acted to create an infrastructure that would eventually lead to, they hope, private investment by qualified retailers.

Any merchant is invited to contact VernonChamber.com and download an application for this event. The cost of an exhibit space is $75 per 10x10-foot area; food vendors also must download a County Health Department application.

The Vernon chamber, vernonchamber.com, is the collective voice of area businesses and invites local businesses to share their own expertise with the community. Respond ASAP by calling 973-764-0764, 862-268-5785, or email info@vernonchamber.com.
