Vernon Education Association supports campaign

The Vernon Township Education Association in a show of solidarity with their New Jersey Education Association colleagues throughout the state took part in the Get Back in the Black campaign on May 6.

The color black was the dress code of the day for teachers, faculty and staff as the STATE State Supreme Court was scheduled to hear arguments over Governor Christie's $1.57 billion cut to the public employee pension fund in this fiscal year's budget.

In 2011, a new law known as Chapter 78 increased employee contributions to the pension system and reduced benefits, but it also created a contractual right to the state’s share of the pension funding. By enacting that law, the governor and the legislature made a promise they would commit themselves to follow a payment schedule that would ensure full funding of the pension system over the course of seven years.

The VTEA remains an active part of the #FundNJPension campaign to encourage that the laws that were made are followed.
