Lounsberry Hollow students spread Autism awareness

| 24 Apr 2015 | 12:45

April is Autism Awareness month and Ranzan and Ms. Latella’s Language Learning classes at Lounsberry Hollow Middle School decided to have the students in their classes paint puzzle pieces and make them into pins.

A puzzle piece is the symbol for Autism Speaks, a non-profit organization helping spread awareness about Autism. Autism is a neurological disorder that affects communication and social interaction.

Across grade levels, students collaborated in the making and selling of the puzzle piece pins. Through this process, the students have gained many skills including counting money, the process of buying and selling, artistic expression and positive social interactions. Due to the overwhelming response and support from students and staff throughout the district, the students have exceeded all expectations not only with the money they raised but with the spreading of awareness about autism. This has been an extremely positive experience for all involved.

Single puzzle piece pins are on sale for 50 cents. Double puzzle piece pins are $1. Students have raised $710 through the sales.

If you are interested in purchasing a pin or making donation, please contact Mrs. Ranzan or Ms. Latella at 30 Sammis Road.
