The New Jersey Forest Fire Service is investigating the cause of a fire that ravaged three acres of hardwood trees in the Pochuck section of Vernon Sunday afternoon.

New Jersey Forest Fire Service Fire Warden Jason Von Oesen said the fire destroyed oak trees and birch trees in a heavily forested area.

The fire was put out by Forest Fire Service helicopters which dropped water on the area.

The fire was contained to the woodlands and did not spread to nearby houses and a cell tower.

Oesen said responders "were able to knock it down pretty quickly." The lack of heavy winds helped keep the fire under control.

Oesen said the leading cause of forest fires is humans. Investigators were searching the area this week for clues on what may have started the blaze.

On Thursday, Oesen said there were no updates on the investigation.
